FENS (Foreign Educated Nurses Refresher Course)
The FENS Course was created to update and enhance the nursing knowledge and clinical skills of foreign-educated nurses preparing for entry into active nursing practice in Texas, addressing foundational competencies for various fields of nursing in today’s increasingly complex practice settings.
The FENS Refresher Course is a program comprised of didactic and clinical components:
- Didactic component— Composed of 6 Modules and completely online. It is designed to be completed at a pace of 2 weeks per Module. A self-paced format allows for some flexibility within the course timeline. There are 3 exams, a pharmacology exam, a mid-term, and a final exam, as well as, several homework assignments. The Instructor will be available to all students throughout the course of the program.
- Clinical component—Follows successful completion of Modules 1 and 2 of the didactic component, as well as, a 12 hour skills check-off day at the school location in Trophy Club, Texas. The Texas Board of Nursing and Texas Workforce Commission require 120 clinical hours with the schedule determined by the assigned preceptor and approved by the Instructor. The student should be prepared to work 8-12 hours on any shift, which could include days, nights, and weekends.
- Course Completion—When both the didactic and clinical components are completed successfully, the student will receive a certificate of completion. The student can then apply for their Texas Nursing License from the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
