Several of these products were not available for purchase in pharmacies due to their low turnover and high cost. This forced user to buy them in places which did not guarantee the product quality putting the health of the population at risk.

DIGEMID approved a list of medical devices to be available at the drugstores and laboratories where people who need them can buy at ease and reducing illegal trade. The document also stated that other medical devices such as vital signs monitors, defibrillators, electrocardiographs, anesthesia machines, X-ray equipment, tomographs, mammograms, in vitro diagnostic reagents, etc. can be purchased directly from the drugstores by healthcare professionals at Institutions that Provide Health Services (IPRESS). The DIGEMID specialists also indicated that very low-risk medical devices such as stethoscopes, electronic thermometers, dental instruments can be sold directly to the public in commercial establishments.

Peru: Lack of basic equipments in hospitals threatening the lives of thousands of patients https://globalhealthintelligence.com/news/peru-lack-basic-equipments-hospitals-threatening-lives-thousands-patients/ Wed, 09 Nov 2016 00:31:04 +0000 https://globalhealthintelligence.com/?p=3128 Ministry of Health of Peru investigated several public hospitals in the country and found that most of the hospitals are facing shortage of medicines and basic medical equipments. Even syringes, gloves, beds, diagnostic kits, minor surgery equipments are not available in sufficient amount in the hospitals. Some healthcare professionals from major hospitals during audit stated that despite being affiliated with Integral Insurance health (SIS), poor patients need to sell their small properties, such as farms and cattle, to keep alive their relatives. The case is worst with patients who need to stay for long in hospitals for recovery. For instance, burned patients, patients living with chronic diseases and patients who undergo major surgeries need to stay for a long time in hospital. One of the most modern hospitals in the capital, the Hospital of Villa El Salvador, Level II, works only at 15% capacity because of dearth of skilled workforce, lack of infrastructure and medical equipment.
